14 March 2010

Thank you too all that made the journey to Toolernvale for Northern's 16km Time Trial.  In warm and windy conditions on a very open circuit there were a few incredible results posted.  The two to mention would be Tommy Gray and Ray Rhodes.  At 67 years old these 2 amazing cyclists showed up all others by posting the first and third fastest times on the day from 36 riders of all ages.  Tommy and Ray posted 24:27min and 24:53min respectively.

Tommy Gray is in fact a seasoned time trialist finishing an incredible 5th in the World Masters Games 19km Time Trial last year.  Tom road that time trial at 36.4km/h and today averaged 38.5km/h.  He is obviously in incredible form and showing no signs of slowing down.

12 March 2010

We look to have a great turnout for Sunday's 16km Time Trial (incorporating the NVCA Time Trial Championships) with 35 starters.  We have prizes for the following categories:

Female  (5 starters)
35-44yr (5 starters)
45-54yr (7 starters)
55-64yr (10 starters)
65-74yr (7 starters)
Over 75 (1 starter)

First, second and third on age standardised times (AST) will also be rewarded.  For those who do not know, AST's are based on historical data taken over years and years of time trialling and over all age groups and tables have been created in the UK for time trialling over different distances for all ages and genders.  This is supposed to create a level playing field for all competitors regardless of age and gender.  For example, a 39 year old male over 16km on a reasonably flat course, reasonable conditions and decent road surface their AST is 25:07min.  For a 53 year old female their AST is 31.35min.  So, with this in mind the 39 yr male has to beat the 53 yr female by more than 6:28min to post a faster AST.  Hope this explains it adequately.

Shortly after the time trial we have a short (32km) group handicap with 35 starters.

Good luck and see you all there.

9 March 2010

We are at Toolernvale this Sunday, and we have a Time Trial scheduled over 16km (1 lap), to be followed by a graded bunch handicap of 32km (2 laps). In the interests of getting everyone home for lunch, we will commence the TT at 9:00am running a minute apart, with faster riders off last. The graded bunch handicap will start at 10:00am and should be very interesting to see how the larger bunches manage themselves around this deceptively challenging circuit. Entries are needed for both these events – either via the link below, or with Bruce Logan, ph: 0438 980 240 or email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 8 March 2010

Congratulations to new member Matt Ellis!!!! who took out the O'Brien Contracting Woodstock Open on Sunday.  Matt riding off 16:30min finished with a large bunch of about 40-50 outsprinting them all to win by half a length.  Matt's excursion to Bendigo proved very profitable taking home a cool $850 in prize money for the win.  Congratulations to all Northern members who took the trip north to Bendigo.
Other riders were:
Paul Logan (3.30min)
Dean Stewart (6.00min)
Trevor Redman (6.00min)
Marcel Musco (15.00min)
Ian Flannery (16.30min)
Tony DeGroot (20.00min)
Phil Hollingworth (29.00min)
Hilary Sissons (36.00min)

1 March 2010

A record field of 73 starters rode the inaugural Irene & Reg Bradley Memorial Handicap at Lancefield in gale force winds which made it impossible for the out and middle markers to make any impression in the results.  The race was taken out by Paul Logan off 2nd scratch, ahead of the charging scratch bunch consisting of some of the strongest Eastern and Central Vets riders.  See the results menu for results.

The entire NVCA committee would once again like to thank Russell Bradley for his generosity and support of this inaugural Handicap to honour both his parents that sadly passed away recently.  Russell's intentions are to make this race big and better in the coming years which will be supported by the NVCA.  The club would also like to thank all the Central and Eastern Vets riders who made the trip down for the race.  We hope that next year's race will attract even more competitors.

21 February 2010

Reminder for next weeks race, being the Bradley Memorial Handicap.  Russell Bradley, a well respected and generous member of the club has put forwarded a very sizeable donation for this race in honour of his parents who both recently passed away.  They were both very keen supporters of cycling and over the years gave a lot to cycling.

18 February 2010

Reminder that this weeks race is at the new crit circuit at McGregors Drive, Keilor Park.  Here is a link to the circuit that should get you where you need to go: http://maps.google.com.au/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=-37.710358,144.8489&spn=0.008454,0.01929&z=16&msid=118016759652996878506.00047f99f08771494e772 This circuit has been handpicked by some of the wisest heads in the club (not mine), and we are very hopeful its going to prove to be the “real” crit circuit that we have needed for a long time – short straights, actual corners (but not too tight), and a great chance of breakaways sticking!

14 February 2010 - Alan Anderson Memorial Handicap (Toolernvale - 48km)

The Northern Vets 2nd biggest race of the year has been run and won for the 17th occasion.  The day out at Toolernvale greeted us with perfect weather, with only slight winds and 65 starters competed for almost $1200 worth of prize money.  The club wishes to thank the Pascoe Vale Hotel and the Anderson family for their generous donations towards this.  The race was taken out by our 2nd and 3rd limit riders who on the day proved just a little too fast for the galloping scratch bunch led by Paul Logan which although covering the 48km distance in record time could only finish in 7th place overall.  At the finish line our 76 year old ex-president Ian Brown took out the trophy.  Below is a brief account by Ian:

Coral Pollard and I started on 27min and worked as hard as we could, but were shocked to be caught by the bunch behind (23min) before the end of the first lap. We thought we were beat, but the roll down past the start/finish line gave me sufficient rest, to lift climbing the hill (doing the turn over the top). I gained confidence from this and managed to hang in with the bunch. Big Phil Hollingworth was doing great work, supported by Michael Waterfield and Gordon McColl, with Catherine Camerlengo riding her usual honest race. I could only manage a turn now and then, especially when the pace dropped. Near the top of Plumpton road, lap three, I was close to going off as Phil, Michael and Ian Beattie opened up a small gap, but I struggled back on. With a rider on the back telling us we would not get caught we settled down for the finish. On the way to the race I told Rebecca where to sprint from if she was in the finish. As it happened I was boxed in until that spot, Phil jumped and opened a gap, which I got through for the win. Gordon McColl rode himself into the ground, and I must thank him and the 23min bunch for the win.

Thank you to the PascoeVale hotel, the Anderson family and our club officials for a great day.
