2010 NVCA Race Program

29 July 2010

Next Sunday's race will be the second time we have raced at McGregor Drive, Tullamarine.  To get to the circuit take Sharps Road, Tullamarine, follow roundabout around to the left onto Keilor Park Drive.  Take the first right into Lambeck Drive and follow this through to Lillee Crescent.  Take a right and you should then find McGregor Drive and the start.  McGregor Drive is not on Google Maps but these directions should find you there.  This circuit is 1.2km, fast and smooth but a little more technical than National Boulevard so we will be running 2 separate times.
B, D and F Grades - 9.00am sharp (40 minute criterium)
A, C and E Grades - 9.45am sharp (40 minute criterium)

Racing returns to National Boulevard this Sunday morning for some more fast criterium racing.  During these cooler months we would like to remind riders that entries close strictly at 9.15am and not a minute later.  Most of the time competing volunteers are taking entries and trying to organise the race to go ahead and thereby getting colder and colder sitting around.  If everyone can be entered by 9.15am then it allows these volunteers to get in an adequate warm up. Entries will be taken from 8.30am.

Just a reminder also to Fiona Dickson and Catherine Camerlengo who are scheduled on to do corner duty.

This Sunday the club is racing at a new circuit first alerted to us by club member Henryk Herbec: the Yellowbox Drive circuit at Somerton. The circuit can be found at Yellowbox Drive Google Map link, and while this is a new circuit, it may prove over time to be better than National Boulevard. What isn’t shown on the map is a big roundabout (with rideable curbing) where Grasslands Ave and Yellowbox Drv meet near the Hume. We have three choices with this circuit – either of the two half circuits (1050-1100m each), or the full circuit (1.5km), and we’re going to try the full circuit first up this Sunday. Start / finish is positioned half way along the north side of the circuit.

Racing this Sunday is the "Flannery Electrics" Eagle Handicap at Pyalong Road, Seymour.  The club asks if as many riders as possible support this race as Ian Flannery, a dedicated club member has now sponsored this event for the past 2 years.  Even though we are in the depths of winter please come along and have a crack at this challenging 52km handicap.  As always entries close strictly on Thursday evening with the handicapper, Bruce Logan.

"Ian Flannery is a qualified & insured electrical contractor offering domestic and commercial electrical services throughout Melbourne's northern and western suburbs.  Please give Ian a call if you require any electrical work done in the coming months."

Brief report from Sunday's racing at National Boulevard, to which attracted a very good 55 riders.  In A grade, once again Eastern rider David Holt proved unbeatable in recent times and will need a bit more combined fire power to be thrown at him if this is going to change.  In B grade, new member for 2010, Matt Rice followed up a 5th two months ago with a great win amongst the biggest field of the day at 17 riders.  In a small field in C grade, super sprinter, the mature Ken Bone from Eastern took out the victory after a 2nd and a 3rd in recent months at National Boulevard.  In D grade the tireless Ollie Kelly finally managed to score a win his first crit win for 2010 beating club captain, Greg and the ever improving Keith Wade.  The smallest fields of the day E and F grades were taken out by John Stevens for the second time in a row and Geelong rider Gordon McColl respectively.

Racing this Sunday returns to National Boulevard for the 2nd week in a row.  Last Sunday saw 46 brave souls tackle cold and slightly wet conditions with some stand out performances once again from our riders. In A grade, Ron McCurdy took out 3rd place in a slow race for his first placing since being promoted from B Grade.  New member for 2010, Anthony McCulloch took out his second win in D grade in a row, this time riding away to win by almost half a lap.  In E Grade, John Stevens took out a great win after a 2nd place in the last criterium a fortnight ago.  In B grade another new member Mario Salvaggio completed a pair of 3rd's in his last two outings and is clearly putting in some great training in the depths of winter.  The last rider that is worth a mention should go to Glenn Courts who after a period away from racing blitzed the largest field of the day by taking out the win in B grade, his first for quite a while against some quality competition.

Another great turnout for Sunday's criterium at National Boulevard with 67 riders in total.  New members Darryn O'Keefe, Fiona Dickson and Blair Coull.  Fiona and Blair finished 1st and 2nd in Division 6 and Darryn had a solid ride in Division 1.  A special mention should go to Sue McCarthy who finished 4th in Division 2.  This is the best placed result for a female member for quite some time and perhaps ever.  Well done, Sue and we hope we continue to see you at the races.

10 May 2010

A cool and windy morning greeted 68 starters for the Mother's Day crit at National Boulevard.  In A grade, the race started furiously with Warren Smith taking off from the beginning, and from that point the attacks didn't stop with Steve Ross, Phil Smith, Phil Cavaleri and David Holt the riders looking for the breakaway.  However, none really stuck for more than a couple of laps until Paul Logan took off at the perfect moment, in hindsight with David Holt managing to cross on his own.  The twosome opened up a handy lead in a short time and with only 10 minutes or so remaining held off the bunch with Holt easily taking the sprint over Logan.  This was Holt's fifth NVCA criterium victory in a row.  Dean Stewart took his 3rd place string to 3 in a row.

B grade was the largest bunch of the day with 20 starters on the line.  Ron McCurdy is riding really well at the moment and took out his 2nd B grade victory in a row after a great 3rd in the Kernot Handicap recently.  Ron's victory took him to 25 points in the Criterium aggregate 6 points clear of 2nd place, Russell Miller.

C and D grade were combined with 14 riders on the start line.  Jeff Romans took the race victory ahead of the ever consistent Greg Dight and the recently promoted Eastern rider, Barry Rodgers.  Barry has managed a 4th, 4th, 4th, 1st and 2nd in E grade and now a 3rd in D grade.  Great consistent racing by Barry.

E grade had 15 riders on the start line and Ian Bishop took a good win in a tight sprint from Marek Augustynek with Rebecca Brown taking her first E grade place followed closely by Bruce Logan.

F grade with 9 starters was taken out by Dick Purcell over the two Eastern riders Stewart Jenkins and the age-defying Rod Goodes.

Current criterium aggregate standing:
1. Ron McCurdy - 25
2. Russell Miller - 19
3. Paul Logan - 17
4. Dean Stewart - 15
5. Jason Fowler - 14

4 May 2010

Can you believe it, time really does fly, racing this Sunday (9th May) is again back at National Boulevard.  Don't make Mother's Day an excuse, the Mums will be still there ready to be pampered when you get home just before lunchtime!!  It has been 7 long weeks since the last criterium way back in March.  Between then and now we have raced a couple of handicaps, a week off for Easter, the Gippsland Combine handicap, the NVCA Benghazi Open and last week the Age Championships.

There must be a few of the big sprinters out there just champing at the bit to get back onto the flat fast crit circuit.  Remember racing is on at 9.30am, with entries opening at 8.30am and closing at 9.15am sharp.

From 2010 a few new rules will be enforced at all handicap races:

1. No-shows and late entries for Handicap races will be charged $10 and $20 respectively

2. All riders must be at the start line ready to race at least 3 minutes prior to your start or else a 1 (one) minute penalty will be applied to your final finish time.

3. All riders must be within the red cones (left side) at the start line for all riders safety.  If this is not adhered to a $50 fine will be handed to the offending rider or riders at the race referrees discretion.

4. All riders receiving prizes or prize money must be present in person at the presentations or their prizes wil be forfeited.  This includes all scratch races.
